Telluride, Colorado | @brett_schreck
To call Telluride difficult to reach would be an understatement. So would saying that a trip to one of Colorado’s most sought-after destinations is well worth it. A small town with a big presence, Telluride is renowned for its views, peaks, and trails — so while you don’t have to be outdoorsy to get on its wavelength, it certainly helps.

Fun Fact:
At an elevation of 9,078 feet, Telluride Regional Airport is the highest commercial airport in North America.

September — November
Telluride has so much to offer throughout the year that there’s no bad time to visit. Those who want to ski should come in the winter, cinephiles flying in for the film festival will be there for Labor Day, and hikers will have a good time year-round. That said, autumn will allow you to do a little bit of everything — Telluride is especially picturesque when the leaves change color, and early snow might even allow for some skiing.

Telluride Mtn Gondola | @tomsar65
10,540 Feet
Most gondolas are simply a way to get around, a mere means to an end; Telluride’s are an adventure unto themselves. Whether trekking from your Airbnb to town or from town to the slopes, the ride will be as gorgeous as it is fun. (Fret not, acrophobes: It’s not that scary.) Usually open until midnight, the “G” is also free — meaning you can take the full eight-mile, 13-minute joyride through the San Juan Mountains day or night.
Bridal Veil Falls | @brentongreg
If a Bear Falls in the Woods...
Telluride isn’t as beautiful as you’ve heard — it’s more so. One case in point is Bear Creek Falls, an 80-foot waterfall reachable via a 2.3-mile hike. The journey is almost as striking as the destination in this case, and the trail is considered easy-to-moderate by hikers (many of whom bring their dogs along for the journey). Like just about everywhere else in Telluride, it’s worth bringing your camera. Just as astonishing (if not more so) is Bridal Veil Falls, which you can see from Main Street and is well worth the 1.8-mile hike.

Coming to a Theater Near You
If you’re in Telluride during Labor Day Weekend, you’ll see it taken over by one of the most important film festivals of the year. The unofficial launch of Oscar season, it’s where everything from “The King’s Speech” and “Moonlight” to “Blue Velvet” and “Marriage Story” first premiered. Think of it as a kind of cinematic summer camp where the actors, directors, and producers behind some truly great movies mill about as though they were at a friend’s barbecue or garden party. If you’d like a chance to see next year’s Best Picture winner before it hits theaters, buy a pass and get your popcorn ready.
Jud Wiebe Trail | @theopeningbelleblog
Just One Trail
Telluride is even prettier from above, particularly when traversing the Jud Wiebe Trail. That’s where you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the town and its surrounding area, with aspen trees and meadows along the way. The three-mile loop should take you about two hours, or more than enough time to build up an appetite for one of the many great restaurants back in town.

"There are very few places I’ve traveled to that have brought a sense of welcome and beauty as Telluride has. A beautiful city gently nestled between a mountain range definitely gives the nickname ‘the Swiss alps of the US’ an appropriate name. I will most definitely be looking forward to coming back here again."

Get Your Steamed Hams
Most people don’t come to Telluride specifically for the burgers — but they might, if they knew about Steamies. Located just across from Main Street’s historic courthouse, it’s a no-frills joint with some seriously tasty burgers as well as chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, and the ever-delicious cheese-ooze fries. You could also go there... literally, as that’s the name of perhaps the most adventurous eatery in town. Meals are meant to be shared here, with everything from grilled kushiyaki skewers to edamame falafel coming in communal portions; even better, most of the menu is locally sourced.

Madeline Hotel & Residences | @madelinetelluride
Snow Day
There are many fine places to stay in Telluride, but only one has an Alaskan sled dog experience: The Madeline. If yelling “mush” to those endlessly energetic pups isn’t exciting enough for you, there’s also heli-skiing, horse rides, and fishing — not to mention the actual hotel, which is next-level cozy and luxe.

"Nestled in Box Canyon in Southwest, Colorado at an elevation of 8750 feet Telluride, Colorado is off the beaten path and worth the effort it takes to get there. Take a step back in time and visit the Sheridan Bar on Main Street." – @brett_schreck
